Research stages:
- one stage at the University of Cassino, Italy, in 1994 (5 months), as
a Ph.D. student.
- several stages at LEMD-CNRS/UJF
Grenoble (which was renamed in G2E Lab) in the period 1995-2008: in the frame
of a Training and Research Network for the Central and Eastern Europe, as a
Ph.D. student, in the frame of a TEMPRA project and in the frame of national
grants, as Ph.D. researcher. The total period spend in
Main research results.
The most important Florin Ciuprina’s contributions are related to the following research topics:
-Electric conduction in polymers – main topic of the PhD thesis
-Water trees in polymers – he designed experimental setups and
elaborated studies that refer the to influence of various factors (heating,
radiations, etc) on the propagation of water trees.
-Aging of polymers – experimental studies related to polymer degradation
under the simple or combined actions of electrical, thermal and radiation
stresses.
-Numerical modeling of the electromagnetic field – modeling the electric
field repartition the in nanodielectrics and in polyethylene samples with water
trees.
-Electrical characterization of polymeric nanocomposites – studies of the influence of the type and concentration of nanoparticles, of the temperature and radiations on the properties (especially the electric ones) of the polymeric nanocomposites
The three most creative Florin Ciuprina’s scientific discoveries are related to:
· the influence of the ionizing radiations on the inititiation and propagation of water trees in polyethylene;
· the clarifying of the role of polyethylene crosslinking on the water tree growth in polyethylene insulation;
· the observation of a strong influence of the water absorption on the relaxation frequency in LDPE-SiO2 nanocomposites.
The most prestigious journals in which his publications can be found are: IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, Journal of Radiation Physics and Chemistry, Journal of Advanced Research in Physics, IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications. Florin Ciuprina participated actively at the international scientific community as reviewer: for the journals IET Science, Measurement & Technology, Journal of Applied Polymer Science, Iranian Polymer Journal, Revue Romaine de Sciences Techniques - Electrotechnique et Energetique and the UPB Buletin, for the programme Fulbright Science and Technology Award – 2010; expert reviewer in the program Earth Sciences and Engineering program, Georgian NSF (http://www.gnsf.ge/), Georgia.; member in the national database of the expert reviewers from Romania. He was also a member of the organizing committee and/or of the international scientific commitee of the conference Materials for Electrical Engineering (1997, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010).
He coordinated research activities carried out in cooperation with international partners, as follows: LEMD-Grenoble (France), Borealis Polymers AB (Sweden) and NEETRAC Georgia (USA), the results being finalised in 4 ISI papers.
Since 2006 he is the head of the Dielectrics Laboratory having as goal to do research and teaching for Ph.D and master students in the dielectrics domain. The national projects he won and lead allowed him to aquire a dielectric spectrometer NOVOCONTROL, as well as computers and electromagnetic field software representing a total budget of over 80,000 Euro.
